TomTom Adds New Carbon Footprint Feature To Vehicle Management System

CTBR Staff Writer Published 26 April 2010

TomTom Work has added new features to its Webfleet vehicle management and communication system designed to help businesses manage their carbon footprint and reduce their impact on the environment. The new carbon footprint feature allows businesses to run reports on their vehicles, for the whole fleet, specific groups, or individual vehicles.

Webfleet automatically calculates carbon emissions from the recorded mileage of each vehicle allowing fleet managers to take direct steps that reduce the carbon emissions of the fleet, the company said.

The Idle Time feature is incorporated on the Link 300 device, part of the Webfleet system that goes into every vehicle. Idle Time records the time an engine is left running while the vehicle is at a standstill.

Fleet managers can see exactly which vehicles have burned unnecessary fuel, and ensure that idling is minimized in the future.

Webfleet can also help promote an eco-friendly driving style by detecting and reporting fast acceleration and harsh breaking events that increase fuel consumption and carbon emissions, the company claimed.

Webfleet provides report on detailed measurements for the overall efficiency, performance and safety of the whole fleet. Current features include planning; vehicle tracking and consignment tracing; compilation of reports on vehicle usage and mileage; navigation for drivers; and instant two-way communication.

Michael Geffroy, vice president of sales at TomTom Work, said: "These new features make a real difference in the overall carbon output of a fleet, especially when combined with the overall benefit of reducing the amount of miles driven by smart scheduling, better routing and vehicle management.

''They are a welcome addition to our connected navigation solutions for customers who want to operate in a more environmentally friendly way."
